A gratifying story from one incredible dog shelter!
Several months back I received a personal email from the director of an under-funded, over-crowded, open-admission dog shelter (Butte Humane). What really got my interest was the “enrichment” program they have created for their dogs. We figured our Puzzle Toys would be a prefect fit for this program. We know our dog toys are not indestructible but we believe dogs love soft toys more than harder materials that often go unplayed with. We’ve designed our Plush Puppies to be more durable than other plush toys, and I thought this would be a great test to prove the durability of our toys.
The letter I received from Lyndsay, the coordinator of the shelter, is below. She also posted short video of the actual dogs in action.
Dear Kyjen,
Thank you so much for your generous donation of dog toys! The staff, volunteers, and especially the dogs and puppies of Butte Humane Society have been having such a wonderful time with them!
Since we are a small, over-crowded, open-admission shelter our dogs get really stressed while they’re here. We’ve implemented a kennel enrichment program to keep the dogs as calm and happy as possible while they are in our care and waiting for their Forever Homes. Part of this program is the “Toy Trolley” which gets rolled out every morning to distribute toys, chewies, and bones to our pooches to play with or chew on for the hour before we open to the public. This hour is their “Quiet Time” to settle down in their kennels and have some productive mental stimulation
Each morning when a volunteer brings out the Toy Trolley the dogs get SO excited and your wonderful toys have had them just jumping for joy (as you can see by the video)! The humans here have been thrilled too, since the toys are so durable there’s less clean up to do afterward. Logan – the first dog in the video – is a master of demolishing his plush toys within about ten seconds of receiving them, but low and behold! An hour after he got his first Tuff Grunt it was still in one piece! Since our shelter has such a tiny budget for enrichment for our animals, having these durable toys that that dogs love so much has been wonderful for everyone.
The Chicken Ball Buddies have been special favorites among our Missouri fight-bust Pit Bulls. One pup (Apple- who has since been adopted) made it quite clear to us that he just could NOT leave his foster home without his special chicken, and Pete (the tan Pit rolling around in his Dogloo in the video) obviously loves his too!
Thank you so, so, so much again for the toys!

O’Mally the Ultimate Hedgehog Dog!
O’Mally is addicted to Plush Puppy Hedghogs. It’s well known around the Kyjen office to that Kim’s dog is a junkie. He’s always seeking out hedgehogs — and at the Kyjen office there are plenty of hedgehogs around, from the various stages of top-secret product development to our extensive current line-up. He plays, sleeps and does anything he can to get them. He’ll even carry two at a time around in his mouth. The other day he saw a top-secret prototype on top of a cabinet in my office, he came in a whined with his eyes fixated on the hog he wanted until he got it — fortunately I still have the blueprints for that prototype. He’ll even go “shopping” in the warehouse — perusing the shelves of toys and prototypes until he spots one that suits his fancy. See O’Mally in action in this short video:
Long Body Squeaker Mats are a blast (and a big Hit)!
Long Body Squeaker Mats
If your dog hasn’t yet tried a Long Body Squeaker Mat, it is about time he did! The secret behind the durability of the Long Body Squeaker Mat is strength in numbers — the number of squeakers that is. Sixteen squeakers in two rows of 8 line the back of these cute characters. If your dog kills one squeaker he still has 15 to go!
Long-lasting squeaks isn’t the only reason dogs love these toys. They love to carry and shake the long, floppy bodies in their mouths. This long, flappable shape taps right into a dog’s natural instinct as a hunter.
For reader’s of this blog (for the next 3 days) we’ll take off 1% for each squeaker in a Long Body Squeaker Mats — 16% off. Use LONGBODY16 to get 16% off our original series Long Body Squeaker Mats (Gator, Cow, Mallard, Wiener Dog) in our store.

Mikala Semerad:
Our French bulldog Marvin has a funny reaction to electronic devices that make noise like my computer’s fan and neck massagers. I received a heat/massage mat for Christmas and every once in a while I lay it on the bed and turn it on to relax. The other night, my boyfriend was playing with the settings, turning it on and off (and of course Marvin was on the bed because he’s a spoiled baby), when Marvin began pouncing on the mat and “digging” at the little vibrating devices. We’d turn it off and he’d sit and stare. Then we’d turn it back on and he’d pounce like a cat. Then off. Stare. Then on. POUNCE! DIG!! Stare, pounce, stare, pounce. It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. We had to make him get down and sleep in his kennel because he wouldn’t relax and go to sleep. I’d be perfectly happy to reproduce it and record a video of it for you.
Also, I just wanted you to know that Marvin loves playing with his 16-squeaker squirrel toy and his little squeaky rubber chickens. Thanks for the great toys!
Lindsey Shogren:
This summer my husband and I moved across country. My Boston Terrier absolutely cannot stand car rides and will cry and pant the whole time, unless she is allowed to stick her head out the window (and I won’t let her stick her head out unless we are going slower than 15 mph, so there is lots of crying). We decided that we would try some mild sedatives to see if that would relax her on the long journey. On day 5 of our trip and after many hours of crying dog, we hit some major road construction and were stuck going about 5 mph. Since we were going so slowly I decided that I would roll down the window and allow her to stick her head out. The mixture of sedatives (that hadn’t seemed to have had much effect till then) and fresh air must of hit her pretty hard because the next thing I knew she was almost limp hanging halfway out the car window (I had a good grip on her harness so she wouldn’t fall). Every time I would try to roll up the window and pull her in, she would start crying and whining! So my husband and I gave in and let her spend the next 45 minutes while we were stuck in construction drunkenly hanging out the car window. Wonder what the construction workers were thinking. After we got through the construction she was content to sleep for the rest of the day curled up in her little bed in the back seat, which was the best (and pretty much only) sleep she got the whole 11 day trip.
Clare and Michael Romero:
Our dog Romeo loves his dollies. We call all his stuffed animals dollies. Sometimes he loves them a little bit too much. Here is an example. We somtimes take Romeo to doggy day care to let off some steam and play for a day. When Romeo gets home after a day running around with the other dogs, he is a little bit excited. He likes to grab his nearest dolly and run around. Then he places his dolly on top of his dog bed. Then he scrunches his dog bed up and humps it with his dolly on top. It really is a sight to see and causes a huge laugh from my husband and me everytime!
Thank you to all everyone who entered! The winners will be contacted shortly so they can receive their ‘Funnies’ Squeaker Mats.
